Seeds of bipartisanship at the Captiol might bring some lush gardens to Minnesota's prisons.
Freshman Rep. Glenn Gruenhagen introduced a bill on Thursday that would establish gardening programs in the state's correctional facilities. Inmates would tend to vegetables and other plants, which they would later eat.
Extra food would be donated to food shelves or charities.
The bill, authored by a staunch conservative, has drawn an unlikely cosponsor from across the aisle: DFL Rep. Kate Knuth, a champion of all things environmental.
A possible origin of the bill? Gruenhagen's Facebook page says he "worked as a volunteer for 13 years in Christian jail ministry."
Of course no bill would be complete without a mandatory annual report. Commissioners would have document cost savings, the amount of food grown and the type of plants grown.
