Freeze Threat Persists in Florida

January 4, 2010 at 1:25PM

Near-record low temperatures will occur again tonight and Tuesday night as acold wave brings frost and freeze into the heart of the Sunshine State. The cold will hold greatest significance for central Florida away from theimmediate coast, along a corridor reaching north to south from about Orlando toLake Okeechobee. Here, any area having important citrus and winter vegetablecrops will register low temperatures between 25 and 35 degrees.

Variations in wind as well as proximity to lakes or built-up areas will help tomake the difference between relatively harmless lower to middle 30s andpotentially damaging hard freezes. Most of the region will fall within theformer category.

Nevertheless, the coldest spots across the heart of central Florida will dip aslow as 25 degrees with readings below freezing for several hours.
