Free Neighborhood Puppet Show

Why I love Minnesota in the summer.

It's our sixth summer in Minneapolis and there's still so much to discover!

Yesterday evening, I took Zoe, Maya and the Chinese boy (yes, he's arrived; more on him later..) to a neighborhood puppet show in someone's back yard.

The puppeteers were from OpenEye Figure Theater in Minneapolis and they were fab. (Thanks, Sherry, for your Facebook link to this!)

We watched "A Surprise for Little Grandpa," about a crotchety old guy turning 100 and assorted peripheral characters, including a British punk rocker with a mullet and multiple piercings. My favorite was "The Bad Babies," who'd escaped and, according to the radio alert, were to be considered dangerous, hadn't been fed and needed changing!

Very fun, with some grown-up (grown-up, not adult) humor and bad puns spicing up the kiddie playfulness. About 20 kids and their grown-ups sat on little chairs and sprawled out on blankets.

Best of all, it was free. Just bring a few bills to stick in the hat afterwards. I asked the hosts for some photos and will post them when I get them.

It's part of a summer tour around the metro. Click here to find a show in your neighborhood. Go!

As an eviction crisis has seemed increasingly likely this summer, everyone in the housing market has made the same plea to Washington: Send money — lots of it — that would keep renters in their homes and landlords afloat. It’s too soon to tell how much the immigration crackdown is to blame.
