House hunting, but cash poor? There's free money in North Minneapolis. Three neighborhoods (McKinley, Jordan and Hawthorne) have recently announced programs for people who want to buy houses in one of those three neighborhoods. Qualifying buyers can get either down payment or closing cost assistance that can be used for a down payment, closing costs and fix-up. The grants, which depend on the neighborhood and other factors, are forgivable if you live in the house for a specific amount of time. Interested? This Sunday you'll get a chance to see what's for sale during a tour of 32 houses that are all for sale. Many were former foreclosures that have been fixed up by non-profits, residents and investors. Prices range from $79,900 to $234,900 and real estate agents and lenders with information about those buying programs will be on hand to answer questions and help pre-qualify prospective buyers. The tour is free and self-guided.
The event is sponsored by members of NoMi (short for "North Minneapolis"), a grass-roots organization that's trying to help promote homeownership in several North Minneapolis neighborhoods.
