(Correction: Kelly O'Brien of the U of M College of Liberal Arts' Office of Media and Public Relations informs Hot Dish that "proud as our Department of Political Science is of Nick Clegg and all of his achievements, we can't claim him as an alumnus. He did do graduate work here around 1989-90 but he finished his graduate degree elsewhere...From all accounts he was a memorable student.")
Photo evidence (below) has just been released of Sen. Al Franken's meeting Thursday morning with Deputy British Prime Minister and University of Minnesota graduate Nick Clegg. Clegg, the leader of Britain's Liberal Democratic party, got his masters degree in Minnesota, and, from what we hear, has gone far with his Midwestern education. Clegg met with Minnesota's junior senator, a liberal Democrat in his own right, for about 30 minutes. Staffers say they talked about a wide range of issues facing both the U.S. and the U.K., including health care, the war in Afghanistan, and education reform. They also discussed the difficult economies their countries are facing and the steps they believe need to be taken to spur economic growth. And, of course, they discussed Clegg's time as a graduate student at the U of M and his memories of having to dig out of the snow.
