Four Minnesota D-III basketball teams ousted in NCAAs

Luke Morrison scored 22 points, all in the second half, and the Calvin men's basketball team beat St. John's 77-71 to open the Division III NCAA tournament Friday in Platteville, Wis.

Zach Hanson had 19 points and 11 rebounds for the Johnnies. The Knights (21-8) took the lead for good at 44-42 with 12:53 to play.

St. John's (23-5) pulled within two several times, the last at 73-71 with 22 seconds left, but Thad Shymanski made two free throws and the Knights held on.

Pomona-Pitzer 67, Northwestern (St. Paul) 66: Joe Cookson made a tiebreaking three-pointer with 47 seconds left and the Sagehens (22-4) beat the Eagles (22-7) in Elmhurst, Ill.

Noah Alm missed a jumper at the buzzer for Northwestern, which led 44-36 early in the second half. Caleb Waldeck led the Eagles with 18 points.

Women

Simpson 73, Gustavus Adolphus 67: Five players scored in double figures for the host Storm (26-1), who opened with the NCAA tournament by beaing the Gusties (22-5) Indianola, Iowa. Emma Kniefel scored 24 points for Gustavus, which trailed 52-35 after three quarters.

Wisconsin-Eau Claire 61, North Central 46: Jadelyn Ganski scored 20 points and the host Blugolds (22-7) beat the Rams (24-5), who were making their NCAA tournament debut.
