Former Wayzata football coach Roger Lipelt, 70, died Wednesday after battling cancer for several years.

Lipelt coached the Trojans from 1976 until 1998, won nine conference titles, and was inducted into the Minnesota High School Football Coaches Association's Hall of Fame in 2001. He came out of retirement in 2004 to help start the football program at Providence Academy in Plymouth.

Two of his former football captains are current Wayzata football coach Brad Anderson and Benilde-St. Margaret's boys' hockey coach Ken Pauly.

Lipelt also coached boys' tennis at Wayzata for 17 seasons.

Schmitz repeats as MGA Mid-Am championSammy Schmitz of Valleywood Golf Course successfully defended his title in the Minnesota Golf Association Mid-Amateur Championship at Midland Hills Country Club on Wednesday.

Schmitz fired a final-round 73 to give him a 54-hole total of 215 (1 under par), good for a two-stroke margin over Daryl Schomer (Wapicada GC) and a three-shot edge over Jesse Bull (Golden Valley G&CC) and John Anderson (Bunker Hills GC).

With the victory, Schmitz also claimed his second consecutive MGA Player of the Year title.
