MEXICO CITY — A judge has acquitted the brother of former Mexican President Carlos Salinas on charges of illegal enrichment.
An official with the federal court system who was not authorized speak publicly, said Tuesday that the final charges against Raul Salinas were dismissed last week, but the decision had not yet been made public. The official did not say why he was acquitted.
Salinas had spent a decade in prison for the 1994 murder of his brother-in-law, at the time the No. 2 of the governing Institutional Revolutionary Party, when he was cleared of that charge and released in 2005.
He also had been acquitted of money laundering. Authorities found more than $100 million in Swiss bank accounts, allegedly amassed during his brother's presidency which ran from 1988 to 1994.
