Florida sprinter Joseph Fahnbulleh, a redshirt freshman from Hopkins, won the 200-meter dash in 19.91 seconds on Friday in the NCAA track and field meet in Eugene, Ore.
His time was the 10th-fastest in collegiate history. It also ranks second in Gators program history and is the sixth-fastest time in the world this year.
Fahnbulleh was at best third in Lane 6 into the stretch but passed runners on his immediate right and left. Terrance Laird of LSU was a close second (19.94).
Fahnbulleh won the 200 twice in the Class 2A state meet competing for Hopkins High Schol in 2018 and 2019 and holds the state record in that event.
He was second in the 200 in the SEC indoor meet this year.
About 45 minutes before his 200 race, Fahnbulleh finished seventh in the 100 (10.26). Laird took first (10.05).
U steeplechaser second
Gophers redshirts senior Alec Basten finished second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in the NCAA meet.
His time of 8 minutes, 29.03 seconds qualified him for the upcoming U.S. Olympic trials and was the second best in program history.
