The Vikings have offered Gene Huey a job as their running backs coach, just days after the 63-year-old was fired by the Indianapolis Colts. The Indianapolis Star reported the offer in today's editions.
Huey was with the Colts for 19 years and helped develop some outstading running backs, including Marshall Faulk and Edgerrin James. But Indianapolis fell to 29th in the NFL in rushing this season, averaging 92.7 yards per game.
Huey's options at this point, according to the Star, are taking the Vikings offer or retiring. New Vikings coach Leslie Frazier was an assistant on the Colts staff for two seasons (2005-06), so he is familiar with Huey.
"I was surprised," by the Colts decision, Huey told the paper. "I think people can look at what I've done here. I feel like I've contributed and the people I've coached and been responsible for have produced." The Vikings are looking to replace running backs coach Eric Bieniemy, who left to become the offensive coordinator at the University of Colorado.
