Growing up, Tommy Doyle was no different from many Edina youths, dreaming of a future in hockey. He was pretty good, too, playing on three state championship-winning youth hockey teams.
"I made some of the 'A' teams,'' said Doyle, whose mother and father were University of Minnesota athletes. "I thought that was the sport I wanted to pursue."
His body, however, said otherwise. As Doyle grew, football coaches began to take notice. Last fall, as a junior standing 6 feet, 6 inches and weighing 250 pounds, he earned a starting spot on Edina's defensive line.
Now 6-7½ and 260 pounds — "And I'm still growing," Doyle said — he sees his athletic future in football. Colleges seem to agree.
Staff writer Jim Paulsen talked with Doyle about his rising profile as a college football recruit.
Q: How long have you been receiving attention from college football programs?
A: I didn't have much attention at first. It was just me and my dad. We hit the road, visited a lot of colleges, sent highlights to a lot of coaches, went to a lot of camps. We started getting more and more interest.
Q: Which colleges did you visit?
