Now that winter is almost over, it's time to talk patios. Chiefly, I'd like to sit on one without inclement weather ruining everything. This summer's obnoxious storm clouds have kept us on our toes, but when the skies clear up, you may want to make your way to Crave, a downtown Minneapolis hotspot that's making major noise. Not that there's anything wrong with pulsating beats.

The scene: When this powerhouse chain of suburban restaurants opened its downtown Minneapolis location in May, owner Kam Talebi said he wanted it to be a little bit "edgier." The pounding club music and packed rooftop are what he was talking about. During happy hour and dinner, Crave is an ideal spot for breezy, outdoor relaxing. Late-night, however, it's party time for the real housewives of Minnetonka.

Best seat: A corner table on the railing above Hennepin Avenue at 9th Street gives you views of the night sky plus the neon-lit theater district below.

Be warned: Talebi originally promoted this Crave as a restaurant first, raging-dance-club last. But if you're planning to nibble on the kitchen's great ahi tuna salad late at night, be prepared to chase it down with some pulsating beats.

Factoid: The $5 million Crave is the rare Twin Cities restaurant that has a full kitchen built onto its rooftop. Food is served until closing time (2 a.m. on weekends).

Patios off the beaten path

PIZZA LUCÉ HOPKINS

What's to like: The newest location of this beloved pizza spot covers its patio with a beautiful overhead pergola and features a walk-up bar.

Surprise: The restaurant is right on the Cedar Lake trail, making it a popular stop for cyclists who can ride all the way from downtown Minneapolis.

LORING PASTA BAR

What's to like: Forget the sidewalk cafe. The setting here is a hidden deck near the top of this Dinkytown restaurant. With only six tables, it's about as romantic as it gets.

Surprise: It's so under-the-radar you almost have to know the secret handshake to get up there. Call ahead for availability.

NGON VIETNAMESE BISTRO

What's to like: The owner of this Frogtown favorite built a mini-oasis out of brick and wood behind the restaurant, complete with herb garden and fountain.

Surprise: Ngon is the only Vietnamese restaurant with an extensive all-Minnesota tap list -- a dozen of the very best from Surly, Lift Bridge, Summit and more.
