Thousands of motorists who use Foley Boulevard in Coon Rapids will be on detour starting Tuesday, the Anoka County Transportation Department said.

Residents living in neighborhoods adjacent to Foley Boulevard and those heading to businesses will still have access to the road, which will be closed between Egret Boulevard and Northdale Boulevard.

The detour sends drivers along Egret Boulevard, University Avenue and Northdale Boulevard.

This spring and summer, the Anoka County will reconstruct the existing two-lane roadway to a four-lane divided roadway with a center median and dedicated right and left turn lanes at full access intersections. Raised medians can reduce crashes and provide extra protection for pedestrians and bicyclists crossing the corridor, the county said.

This project will improve mobility and increase safety by providing additional capacity and reducing access. In addition, the project includes the construction of a separate pathway for pedestrians and bicyclists, the county said.

The new restrictions will be in place until the next designated traffic control switch, later this spring.
