The flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza

viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness, including fever and headaches, and sometimes deadly complications such as pneumonia.

BY THE NUMBERS

On average, 5 percent to 20 percent of the U.S. population gets the flu each year, and about 36,000 people die. This year, federal officials recommend the flu vaccine for most kids between 6 months and 19 years.
