Flooding, Tropical Development Likely across Western India Next Week

A monsoon low will crawl up the western coast of India this weekend, likelybecoming a tropical cyclone by early next week.More than 12 inches of rain is expected to fall across parts of western Indiathrough the weekend. Widespread, heavy rainfall will affect the cities of Goaand Mumbai.

The monsoon low will track over very warm water, and is set to develop into atropical cyclone by early next week.

Landfall of this tropical system is expected during the Tuesday throughThursday time period, and could impact coastal locations from Mumbai, India toKarachi, Pakistan.

This most recent tropical development could be the fourth named system of thetropical season in the Indian Ocean.

The region is cleaning up from last week's Tropical Cyclone Phet, whichinundated the region with heavy rain of over a foot and killed several peoplein Oman, northwestern India, and southern Pakistan. Thousands of people arestill displaced from their homes.

This low pressure system is good news for India, which relies on monsoonrainfall for agriculture and irrigation.
