Flooding Rains Hit the Philippines

April 30, 2009 at 12:30PM

A series of low pressure systems moving westward over the Philippines willlead to devastating flooding through the weekend.Since Wednesday, many areas of the Philippines have recorded over 4 inchesof rain, with local amounts up to 8 inches. Through the weekend another 2 to 4inches of rain will fall, with local amounts exceeding 8 inches.

The result of the heavy rain will be widespread flooding throughout thenation. Along with the heavy rain comes the threat for life-threateningmudslides.

In addition, there is the concern that an area of low pressure currentlyeast of the Philippines could become a tropical storm prior to reaching thePhilippines this weekend. If that were to happen, rainfall totals could exceed12 inches and would be accompanied by strong, gusty winds.
