Flooding Looms for Northeast

February 24, 2011 at 8:25PM

This is one of those situations you don't want to see when there is still deepsnowcover. A lot of water is contained in that snow (as much as 3 or 4 inches),and if it goes all at once, streams and rivers will fill up really fast. The first storm coming through the Northeast Thursday night and Friday is notthe problem; the rain it produces will be absorbed by the existing snowpacksimply because the low-level air will remain chilly.

The storm coming next week will be a much bigger problem. It will turn into apretty intense system as it swirls northward through the Great Lakes Monday. Onthe front side of the storm, it will be rainy, windy and mild, and that willtorch the snow like a flame thrower. This will cause surplus runoff which willcause some rivers and streams to spill out of their banks.
