Heavy rain will break out across southern India and Sri Lanka on Sunday andcontinue for several days. Flooding will become likely on Monday andTuesday.A tropical disturbance will slowly approach southern India. This system couldactually become a tropical storm before reaching land. Regardless ofdevelopment, heavy rain and flooding is likely.
This storm will come on the heels of a very wet November. Rainfall for themonth was more than double normal in some places. The wet weather resulted in alandslide that claimed more than 40 lives in the state to Tamil Nadu.
Widespread heavy rainfall is rather unusual in southern India. For example, theaverage rainfall for the month in Tiruchirapalli is only 2.80 inches. Rainfallby the middle of the coming week could reach 4-8 inches in Tiruchirapalli, morethan doubling the monthly average.
