Flooding rain and damaging winds will strike the northern Philippines owingto the second storm within a week to hit the islands. Chan-hom, a strongtropical storm as of Wednesday morning EDT, will make its way from themid-South China Sea to a landfall upon the northwestern Philippines by Fridaymorning EDT.Landfall will likely happen upon the northwestern shore of Luzon, thenorthern main island of the Philippines, well to the north of Manila. At thetime of landfall, Chan-hom will likely hold tropical storm status, although itwill undergo a stint as a typhoon over open waters before nearing land.
Through Friday, rainfall reaching 10 to 20 inches will douse areas ofnorthern Luzon, triggering flash flooding and mudslides on this hilly tomountainous island. There will be some damaging winds as well.
The worst of Chan-hom's adverse weather will happen far to the north andwest of the areas inundated last week by literally feet of flooding rain owingto Typhoon Kujira.
