Flood Threat for Northeast

February 23, 2011 at 8:25PM

This is one of those situations you don't want to see when there is still deepsnowcover. A lot of water is contained in that snow, and if it goes all atonce, streams and rivers fill up fast. The first storm coming through the Northeast Thursday night and Friday is notthe problem; the rain it produces will fall through chilly air at the ground, and the water will be absorbed by the snowpack.

The storm coming next week will be a bigger problem. It will turn into a prettyintense system as it swirls northward through the Great Lakes Monday. On thefront side of the storm, it will be rainy, windy and mild, and that will torchthe snow like a flame thrower. This will cause surplus runoff which could causesome rivers and streams to spill out of their banks.
