Flashes of Japanese and American dance

The Butoh performance style was developed in post-World War II Japan as a reaction against Western dance trends. An intensely slow, image-based form of movement, Butoh speaks to the Japanese people's trauma and their marginalization during the era. And now University of Iowa professor and Butoh artist Michael Sakamoto wants to take the form in a new direction. "Flash" is his collaboration with Philadelphia-based hip-hop choreographer Rennie Harris, with each performer immersing himself in the other's tradition for a dance show that reflects both of their backgrounds. (7:30 p.m. Fri. & Sat., Intermedia Arts, 2822 Lyndale Av. S., Mpls., $15 in advance, $18 door, 1-800-838-3006, intermediaarts.org.)

FILE -- A rent deposit slot at an apartment complex in Tucker, Ga., on July 21, 2020.
