Five WCHA teams in PairWise top 10

If the NCAA selection committee was picking its postseason tournament field today, five WCHA teams would be in it and possibly a sixth. Denver, Wisconsin and Bemidji State would be three of the top four seeds.

Miami of Ohio is back at No. 1 in all three major hockey polls, USA Today, uscho.com and Inside College Hockey.

Those three polls pretty much agree on the teams behind the RedHawks, too. Wisconsin is No. 2, followed by two other WCHA teams, Denver at No. 3 and North Dakota at No. 4.

Then they start varying a little bit. St. Cloud State is No. 5 in USA Today and uscho.com, and No. 7 in INCH. Bemidji State is No. 6 in USA Today, No. 7 in uscho.com and No. 8 in INCH.

UMD is either No. 9 or 10. Colorado College is No. 11 across the board.

St. Cloud State made one of the biggest jumps, moving up from No. 12, Bemidji State soared from No. 14 after sweeping the Bulldogs.

Minnesota is still among others in the uscho.com ratings but the Gophers' point total has dropped from 30 to six votes.

In the all-important PairWise ratings, the Gophers cling to a tie for No. 24 with a 12-12-2 record. The PairWise system mimics how the NCAA fills out its field after six postseason tournament champions receive bids.

Miami and DU are tied for No. 1, Wisconsin and Bemidji State are tied for No. 3. St. Cloud State is tied for No. 5. UMD is No. 7, North Dakota is tied for No. 10, CC tied for No. 14.

The Gophers, as bleak as things may seem, still have the chance to move up quickly in PairWise because they still have two games with Denver, two with Wisconsin, two with UMD and two with CC. They need a hot streak and some sweeps but Minnesota seems to be missing something.
