A driver fleeing police spawned a five-vehicle crash Tuesday evening in Maple Lake and authorities were still sorting out the details.

A photo posted on Twitter showed a vehicle that was sliced in half as a result of the violent mishap that occurred at 5:35 p.m. on Hwy. 55 at Wright County Road 5.

The State Patrol on Wednesday morning had yet to say how many people were hurt and the extent of their injuries.

Officers with the Wright County Sheriff's Office and the Annandale Police Department spotted a vehicle that allegedly had been in a crash earlier Tuesday near South Haven and attempted to stop the driver. The motorist did not stop and headed eastbound on Hwy. 55 toward Maple Lake.

As the suspect approached Maple Lake, police called off a pursuit just before the crash "involving five vehicles total" ensued, the State Patrol said.

The patrol continues to investigate.
