Five people have applied to fill the District 3 seat on the Minneapolis school board vacated by the death of Hussein Samatar, including his widow, Ubah Jama.

Also applying was Mohumud Noor, who finished in second place in a 2011 special election primary for Minnesota Senate in District 59.

The other applicants are Abdulkadir Abdalla, Ira Jourdain, and Nicque Mabrey.

The school board will pick the new board member, who will serve through the end of Samatar's term at the end of next term. It has scheduled public interviews of applicants for Oct.22, and said that it will select the new board member on Nov. 12.
