Trophy tales

J.D. Landstrom, Excelsior • 37-inch northern pike • Wassermann Lake

The 12-year old, above, had a memorable opening weekend. Fishing with his father Jason, J.D. caught this personal best on May 14 on the Carver County lake. His father reported that J.D. also caught a 7-pound bowfin (dogfish) on Clearwater Lake in Wright County.

That's no log!

Judy Karner of Mounds View caught this 24-inch walleye with a jig and minnow on May 19 in 6-8 feet of water on the St. Louis River near Duluth. At first, Karner thought she had snagged a log, but when her pole bent under the boat, she knew a fight was on.

Walleye chop pays off

Leo Christenson.
(The Minnesota Star Tribune)

Leo Christenson, 12, of Savage, right, caught this 27-inch walleye on May 14 on Lake Winnibigoshish. Christenson, fishing with his father, David, used a jig and minnow to make the catch in 3-4 foot waves.
