Minnesota's first motorcycle death of the year is a 60-year-old man from Sanborn.

Gregory Alan Werner was riding his 1990 Harley Davidson on the 400 block of Central Street about 6 p.m. Sunday in Sanborn, when he crashed in a ditch while navigating a curve, the Redwood County Sheriff's Office said.

He was not wearing a helmet and died at the scene, authorities said.

Werner's death was the second earliest motorcycle fatality ever recorded in Minnesota. The earliest on record occurred on Feb. 23, 2002, according to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety.

Last year, when 61 motorcyclists died in accidents on state roads, the first fatality occurred on March 7, according to the Department of Public Safety.
