First 90-Degree Day Since June

August 5, 2009 at 4:25PM

It was a rarity for a Midwestern city or town to record 90-degree heat thispast July. Most of these places have not endured a temperature that high sinceJune. This lack of highs in the 90s across the Midwest will finally come to anend this weekend.A bulge in the jet stream will allow the heat currently baking the southernPlains to spread northward starting Saturday. Temperatures will surge into the90s as far north as Minneapolis and Chicago at the start of the weekend. The90-degree heat will spread over the central and eastern Great Lakes, as well asthe mid-Atlantic on Sunday.

High humidity will accompany the heat across the Midwest and mid-Atlanticthis weekend. That could pose a danger to anyone who participates in astrenuous activity. The recent lack of heat across the Midwest has also maderesidents more vulnerable to heat-related illnesses. You may have rode yourbike to work every day this past month, but when the heat is added to theequation, you may naturally exert too much energy and become exhausted.
