Full service on the Metro Green Line between the University of Minnesota and downtown Minneapolis has resumed, Metro Transit said.

Buses had been running between the Prospect Park and Stadium Village stations and the Downtown East station since 7:40 a.m. when a fire on the Washington Avenue bridge connecting the East Bank and the West Bank on the University of Minnesota campus has knocked out light-rail service.

The small fire was under the bridge and it was believed that debris possibly belonging to a homeless person was burning. A wire near the bridge also caught fire, authorities said.

Trains were shut down for safety reasons, said Bryan Tyner, a spokesman for the Minneapolis Fire Department.

Vehicular and pedestrian traffic also was prohibited from using the bridge for a short time, the University of Minnesota Police Department said in a tweet.

The bridge was open to all traffic as of 11:05 a.m.

There were no reports of injuries.
