A building housing a grocery and a deli along Chicago Avenue in south Minneapolis caught fire overnight and burned for several hours, prompting neighboring Children's Hospital to temporarily curtail some of its services.
No one was in the building when the blaze broke out about 3 a.m. Thursday in the 2500 block of Chicago Avenue S. and sent smoke toward Children's, forcing that facility to briefly cut off its air-intake and ventilation system, said Deputy Chief Don Leedham. At one point, smoke was getting into the hospital through a revolving door, he said.
The fire, which began in the basement, was declared under control about 7 a.m., Leedham said. No injuries were reported, and there was no immediate word on how the fire started.
