Fine for misplaced license tab: $108

Bloomington man doesn't think punishment fits the crime.

Over the past year, hundreds of you have asked Whistleblower for help. While we can't investigate each tip, we want to share more of what you tell us. In 2009, we started publishing a few tips each week to stimulate online discussion and create ways for our readers to help each other. Unlike our news stories, we have not verified this information. If you have a tip, send it to whistleblower@startribune.com.

Even though his registration is current, a Bloomington man recently got a ticket in Minneapolis because his license plate tabs were in the wrong place.

"A fine of $108 seems to be unnecessarily severe, even if the intent is to encourage drivers to make sure that these tabs are properly placed," he wrote to Whistleblower.

He said the officer could plainly see that his registration was current because the 2011 sticker was visible. However, it was covering a sticker showing the month in which he renewed his registration. He fixed the problem by peeling off the sticker and placing it in the correct location.
"The glue on the tab is not very good and is easy to detach," he said.

Do you think this violation deserves such a hefty fine?
