A remarkable citizen

In Norah Shapiro's lucid documentary "Time for Ilhan" (⋆⋆⋆ out of four stars; unrated) about Ilhan Omar's run for the Minnesota House in 2016, Omar describes herself as "a citizen, who happens to be Somali and a woman." All of those things loom even larger as Omar prepares to take the oath of office as a U.S. representative in January. Although the film was shot just a couple of years ago and premiered at the 2018 Tribeca Film Festival, Omar's rise has been so meteoric that it feels like a lot of time has passed since the events depicted. The film balances unguarded peeks into Omar's private life with her dazzling gift for extemporaneous speaking on the campaign trail, where she is fond of reminding listeners, "You are mighty, you are powerful and, united, we will never be defeated." (Showing at St. Anthony Main, 115 SE. Main St., Mpls. $5-$9.50.)

As an eviction crisis has seemed increasingly likely this summer, everyone in the housing market has made the same plea to Washington: Send money — lots of it — that would keep renters in their homes and landlords afloat.
