Feet of Lake-Effect Snow to Fall

December 10, 2009 at 1:25PM

Looking at how much snow is expected to bury places downwind of the GreatLakes, it is easy to understand why this will be a crippling lake-effect snowevent as 1-3 feet of snow will pile up to the lee of lakes Superior, Erie andOntario through Friday. It is not out of the question that 4-foot totals willbe measured since the snow will wait until Friday night and Saturday to taperoff from west to east.Communities could be crippled by 1-3 feet of snow alone. The fact that blusterywinds will severely blow and drift the snow will only worsen the situation. Attimes, travel will become impossible. Plows may not be able to keep up with thedrifting snow and may just be forced off streets and interstates as blowingsnow creates dangerously low visibility.

One good news with this lake-effect event is that area ski slopes will developa deep base. Ski enthusiasts, just wait until travel conditions improve thisweekend to enjoy the fresh powder.
