Inspections in July of Burnsville warehouses used by coffee and packaged-food wholesaler Bay Island Inc. found the warehouses littered with rodent droppings. In addition, food packages were gnawed open and tainted with urine, according to a warning letter issued by the FDA in October.

Bay Island's warehouses also contained two dead mice and open bay doors did not have control measures in place, such as plastic strips, the Food and Drug Administration letter said. Inspectors noted a pest-control company was setting traps in late July. Bay Island, which is based in Minnetonka, has until mid-November to correct violations or explain why more time is needed. On Monday, Robert Bolling, owner of Bay Island Inc. said the company corrected the violations three months ago and sent documentation to that effect to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The FDA's warning letter dated October 26 states "we have not received documentation of pest control action by a licensed professional or a plan for ongoing pest control." Bolling said he didn't realize the FDA required that information. Read the warning letter here.
