St. Paul police are investigating the death of a man near Earl Street and York Avenue, the second fatal shooting within 24 hours on the city's East Side.

Police responded to the scene near the Earl Street Bridge about 7 p.m. on a report of shots fired. Friends and relatives told reporters the victim, who has yet to be identified, was walking near the bridge when he was shot by someone driving by.

Police were unable to confirm that account Thursday evening. It remains unclear whether the incident is related to Wednesday's fatal shooting, which occurred just a few blocks away. Dozens mourned at the scene, waiting for answers.

The Ramsey County medical examiner will officially identify the victim and release his cause of death.

The shooting does not appear to be random and police say there is no additional risk to the public. Anyone with with information about the incident should contact the St. Paul police homicide unit at 651-266-5650.
