A 43-year-old St. Paul man was shot and killed Sunday night in what police described as a homicide -- the city's first of 2009.
Officers and paramedics responding to a "shots fired" call found Vernon D. Cafle on the back porch of his residence in the 600 block of Duluth Street in the Dayton's Bluff neighborhood of the East Side.
He had been shot multiple times and died at the scene, police spokesman Peter Panos said Monday.
The shooting was not believed to be random, he added.
Investigators believe the shooting occurred on the porch, Panos said. One or two other people were in the residence when authorities arrived, he added, but it was not known who was with Cafle when he was shot.
Anyone with information about the case is asked to call police at 651-291-1111 or CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
