Fatal rollover crash closes lanes on Mendota Bridge

May 24, 2016 at 1:46PM

The Minnesota State Patrol has confirmed that at least one person died in a rollover crash Tuesday morning that led authorities to shut down the eastbound lanes on the Mendota Bridge.

Rush hour traffic was being diverted off Hwy. 55 at Hwy. 5 near Fort Snelling, Minnesota Department of Transportation traffic cameras show.

Fire trucks and ambulances arrived on the scene shortly after the wreck, which occurred at 7:23 a.m., the State Patrol said.

A crash reconstruction team was dispatched to the scene to help with the investigation.

The wreck has led to big backups on the Crosstown. At 8:40 a.m., more than an hour after the crash, eastbound traffic was jammed back to 28th Avenue. Westbound traffic on Hwy. 55 slowed back at the Hwy. 13/Hwy. 110 interchange.

MnDOT advised travelers to avoid the area and expect delays.
