Fatal fall from Columbia Heights apartment window may be tied to drug use

July 30, 2014 at 2:16AM

Brett R. Bamonte, 44, of Northfield, was dead at the scene Friday when emergency responders showed up about 2:45 a.m. at 907 46½ Av. NE., Anoka County Sheriff's Cmdr. Paul Sommer said.

Sommer said there's a possibility that drug use before the fall was involved. Two witnesses told investigators that Bamonte fell through the window screen, he said.

Bamonte's criminal history spanned more than 20 years and included charges last year in Hennepin County that he cheated business owners out of more than $20,000 for advertising space in a flier that was never produced.

He was convicted in July 2013 in Hennepin County of drunken driving and fleeing a police officer. At the time of his death, he was serving probation for that incident.
