Nearly two weeks after an arrow shot by his best friend struck and killed Spencer Swanson, Chaska police said they're still investigating. But they say the shooter's arrow didn't ricochet off the ground like the teen has reported.
Fatal arrow story gets challenged in Chaska
Authorities are looking at the death of Spencer Swanson, hit by an arrow shot by his friend.
Swanson, 16, died Oct. 15, two days after his friend fired the arrow that struck Swanson's head. Attorney Marsh Halberg, who is representing the 16-year-old shooter's family, has said the arrow was tipless and ricocheted off the ground in a "tragic accident" that didn't involve horseplay.
In a statement Wednesday, police said the investigation doesn't support the teen's version of what happened. However, "nothing has been revealed to indicate intent to cause Spencer's death."
Halberg declined to comment Wednesday on the police statement and said he respects the ongoing investigation.
Police have relayed information to the Carver County attorney's office, but the case remains under investigation. Once closed, it will be up to the county to determine what charges, if any, will be filed. Discharging weapons, including bows, in Chaska is a misdemeanor.
No one witnessed the Oct. 13 shooting, according to police, who have declined to give details about the type of arrow used or why it was shot in Swanson's direction.
Swanson, whose funeral was Monday, was a junior at Integrated Arts Academy in Chaska. A fund has been set up to help his family. Contributions can be sent to the Spencer Swanson Memorial Trust, BMO Harris Bank, 761 W. 78th St., Chanhassen, MN 55317.
