Makeshift Accessories trunk show
An entire accessory line made out of license plates and street signs veers on novelty, but we're not complaining. Who wouldn't get a kick out of showing off a cuff made out of an Iowa license plate? Makeshift Accessories is the project of two brothers, Devin and Eric Johnson, who produce the line from salvaged, antique and found materials -- down to the rivets made from electrical wire scraps. The resulting collection of rings, cuffs, money clips and belts is impressively industrial and brimming with irreverence.

Mighty Swell anniversary
Although their sales come but a few times a year, the Mighty Swell Vintage gals have made them bona fide events, thanks to generous helpings of colorful print dresses, whimsical tops, breezy skirts and eye-popping accessories from the '50s to the '80s. To celebrate their first birthday, they're hosting a one-day sale and party with a photo booth, bar cars and drinkware for sale, a food-shelf raffle with prizes, snacks and bubbly, complimentary retro hair and makeup styling and a vintage vinyl soundtrack.
