The family of hospitalized former City Council Member Sandra Colvin Roy said Monday that she suffered a severe brain injury when she was struck by a school bus on Sept. 8, but that it's too soon to know the lasting effect of that.

The family said in its statement that Colvin Roy remains unconscious and in critical condition at Hennepin Council Medical Center.

"Doctors are saying that it's too soon to determine the full extent of her brain injury and what kind of impact it will have on her cognition and activities of daily living," the family said.

Colvin Roy is stable enough, according to her her Caring Bridge site, that plans are being made to transfer her to an intermediate care facility.

"We have a long road ahead and mom is showing many great signs that as always she is up to the task," her daughter Leah posted.

Colvin Roy was struck by a school bus at the intersection of E. 49th Street and 28th Avenue S. Family friend Pam Blixt posted that the police investigation has been hampered by a lack of witnesses. A police spokesman said Friday that the investigation is continuing.

The president of Minneapolis & Suburban Bus Co. said earlier that the unidentified driver of a bus that struck Colvin Roy had a good driving record in four years of working for the company but won't be driving while police investigate the accident. Here's the full family statement: "We sincerely appreciate all of the concern for Sandra and we thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers. As a result of an accident on September 8, she sustained a severe brain injury and remains unconscious and in critical condition at HCMC. Doctors are saying that it's too soon to determine the full extent of her brain injury and what kind of impact it will have on her cognition and activities of daily living. Unfortunately, the lasting effects of her injuries may not be known for some time, but we do know that she has a long road of recovery ahead of her. We thank you for your continued support during this difficult time."
