The family of former Minneapolis City Council Member Sandra Colvin Roy said Monday that she suffered a severe brain injury when she was struck by a school bus on Sept. 8, but that it is too soon to know the lasting effects.

The family said in a statement that Colvin Roy remains unconscious and is in critical condition at Hennepin County Medical Center.

"Doctors are saying that it's too soon to determine the full extent of her brain injury and what kind of impact it will have on her cognition and activities of daily living," the family said.

Colvin Roy is stable enough that plans are being made to transfer her to an intermediate care facility, according to her Caring Bridge website.

"We have a long road ahead and mom is showing many great signs that as always she is up to the task," her daughter Leah posted.

Colvin Roy was struck by a school bus at the intersection of E. 49th Street and 28th Avenue S. in Minneapolis. Family friend Pam Blixt posted that the police investigation has been hampered by a lack of witnesses. A police spokesman said Friday that the investigation is continuing.

As an eviction crisis has seemed increasingly likely this summer, everyone in the housing market has made the same plea to Washington: Send money — lots of it — that would keep renters in their homes and landlords afloat.
