About 1,300 people have been arrested on suspicion of drunken driving in December, according to preliminary information from the Department of Public Safety.
County sheriff's offices, municipal agencies and the State Patrol are working overtime this month in a campaign to prevent drunken-driving crashes, injuries and deaths. Each year, nearly 30,000 people are arrested on suspicion of drunken driving in the state. In the past three Decembers (2009-2011), 28 people died in drunken-driving crashes and 7,497 were arrested over drunken driving.
"A DWI is certain to ruin the holidays, but thankfully these motorists were taken off the road before they caused real and direct harm to another motorist," said Lt. Eric Roeske of the State Patrol.
