Ex-Timberwolves player Christian Laettner owes creditors more than $14 million and could face bankruptcy.

The Lexington Herald-Leader first reported that five creditors, some of which are professional athletes, filed papers last week to try and force Laettner into bankruptcy and have his financial affairs supervised by the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in North Carolina. He has until July 19 to respond.

If Laettner is unable to pay the debt or negotiate an arrangement, the creditors could take possession of his property. His home in Florida was foreclosed on last March and sold in October.

One of Laettner's lawyers told ESPN that Laettner's real estate firm recently received a $10 million payday and those funds could satisfy the creditors.

According to court documents, Laettner owes Carolina Panthers running back Jonathan Stewart $3.6 million and former linebacker Ernest Sims nearly $1.5 million.

Laettner and his real estate firm have had financial troubles in the past. They were ordered by the courts to pay back $2.5 million to former Chicago Bulls star Scottie Pippen for failure to repay a loan made to help a futile attempt at buying the Memphis Grizzlies. They were also ordered to pay back $3.7 million to former NFL defensive end Shawne Merriman for a failed property investment.

Laettner made more than $61 million throughout his NBA career.

The Wolves selected Laettner as the No. 3 overall pick in the first round of the 1992 NBA draft. He played three-plus seasons with the Wolves before being traded to Atlanta. He played 13 seasons with six different teams and was an All-Star in 1997, his first full season with Atlanta.

Michael Rand did a Q&A with Laettner just five years ago. It is worth a read.
