Ex-Vikings QB Kapp fights rival at Canadian football banquet

According to media reports from Canada, former Vikings quarterback Joe Kapp got into a fight on the dais at a Canadian Football League banquet on Friday in Vancouver.

Kapp, 73, and former rival Angel Mosca, 74, had to be separated when Mosca didn't take kindly to flowers that Kapp offered him.

In 1970, Kapp was the Vikings quarterback when the team played in Super Bowl IV -- the first of its four unsuccessful Super Bowl appearances -- losing 23-7 to the Kansas City Chiefs in a game in which the Vikings were heavily favored.

Kapp, a former CFL star, had also quarterbacked the Vikings to their first playoff appearance in 1969

The Canadian Broadcasting Company's web site reported that the confrontation "began after a highlight clip was shown from the 1963 Grey Cup, a game where Mosca drilled Lions running back Willie Fleming in what many considered a controversial late hit."

The CBC also reported that Kapp "offered Mosca a flower as a symbolic peace offering. The sentiment was refused by Mosca and punches were thrown."

Mosca became a professional wrestler after retiring from football, but onlookers said the incident was not staged.

Both men are in the CFL's Hall of Fame.
