Former Centennial girls' basketball standout Megan Nipe, a senior guard/forward at George Washington University in Washington, D.C., will receive the prestigious Robin Roberts/Women's Basketball Coaches Association Broadcasting scholarship.
The $4,500 award is presented annually to a female college basketball player who intends to pursue graduate work and a career in sports communications/journalism. It is named for ABC's Robin Roberts, a former basketball standout at Southeastern Louisiana.
"I am honored to win this scholarship in Robin Roberts' name. She has such an inspirational story, and to be given this award in her name is very special," Nipe said in a release. "I'm excited to pursue my career in the communications field when my playing days are over."
A journalism and mass communication major in George Washington's School of Media and Public Affairs, Nipe has maintained a 3.2 grade-point average throughout her college career. She spent last summer interning with Comcast SportsNet, assisting at Washington Nationals games and Washington Redskins training camp, as well as a national golf tournament.
On the court, Nipe has started all 25 games this season, leading George Washington in minutes played (32.2 per game) and ranking third in scoring (9.5 points) and rebounding (5.1).
Nipe will be formally recognized during the WBCA Awards Show, which will be held on April 8 as part of the WBCA National Convention, held in conjunction with the NCAA Women's Final Four in New Orleans.
