Event brochure scrutinized by city, county wasn't campaign event

Republican leaders said Wednesday that a community expo earlier this month was not a campaign event.

Last week, Eden Prairie and Hennepin County told state Rep. Kirk Stensrud that brochures for the Senior Expo improperly used city and county logos. In a letter, Hennepin County Chief Deputy Attorney David Brown said Stensrud "improperly involved and entangled Hennepin County into this campaign event" by using its logo, giving a false impression the county supported him. The county wouldn't have participated had it known the Senior Expo was a political event, he said.

But House Republican Caucus spokeswoman Jodi Boyne said Wednesday that the Oct. 5 event was not a campaign or political event. She said it wasn't organized by Stensrud's campaign committee; it was organized by Stensrud as a state representative.

Stensrud, an Eden Prairie Republican who represents District 42A, is running for re-election.

In a letter about the use of the city's logo, Eden Prairie City Attorney Richard Rosow said Stensrud acknowledged that the handout "should not have included any logos without asking for permission" and said the matter is resolved.
