Twin Cities security officers voted Saturday to approve a five-year contract agreement reached earlier last week with five contractors.
The 315-6 vote ended an almost four-month stalemate between 800 officers represented by Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 26 and the companies: ABM, Allied Barton, American, Securitas and Viking. The new contract includes wage increases, lower health care costs, paid sick days and more training.
"I'm so proud of the officers of Local 26; they put it all on the line," said union President Javier Morillo-Alicea.
Contract talks between the two parties drew headlines last month after nine security officers were arrested for civil disobedience during a protest at IDS Crystal Court.
"All of the companies are very happy the contract has been ratified," said Guy Thomas, a spokesman for the security firms. "We think this contract is in the best interests of our employees, the public and our clients."
