Friends identified the man who was fatally stabbed early Saturday in the Minneapolis apartment where he lived with his girlfriend, who was jailed on suspicion of murder.

They said Joseph "Moochie" McRunnel, 39, lived in the apartment, which is in the Como neighborhood, just north of Dinkytown and the University of Minnesota.

Police arrived at the 900 block of 15th Avenue SE. shortly after 6 a.m. on a call for "unknown trouble." The man was located and taken to HCMC, where he died, police spokesman John Elder said.

Police also had been called there roughly 40 minutes earlier in connection with an undisclosed disturbance, according to emergency dispatch audio.

Police have not disclosed the nature of McRunnel's injury, but the audio said the victim had a stab wound to the chest.

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office will perform an autopsy and officially release his identity.

The woman, 35, was first taken to a detox facility and then booked into jail about 3:50 p.m. Saturday pending possible charges this week, police said. The Star Tribune generally does not identify suspects who haven't been charged.

Friends and relatives Sunday were mourning McRunnel on Facebook.

In an interview, Ashley Gross said that he just got a great job at a brewery and was getting his life together.

"He was just my friend; he was everyone's friend. … A lot of people will miss him for a lifetime," she said.

Nat Fredrickson said he last spoke with him a couple of months ago, and "he was doing way better. He had his own place, had a job."

McRunnel and his girlfriend "were in love, as far as I could tell," he said. "This really comes as a shock."
