A burning smell and a faulty circuit breaker at an Eden Prairie man's home prompted an emergency call to an electrician in December. The homeowner agreed to a charge of $199 per hour — double the normal rate since the services were after hours. The problem was fixed in about an hour, but the bill that arrived in the mail was for $599.

"When I called to inquire about the discrepancy, I was told that I was billed for drive time for the electrician from Coon Rapids to Eden Prairie and back again," he said.

The homeowner said he would have called another electrician if he would have been told about the charges for drive time.
