Hockey success is expected at Edina, and so far this season, the boys' and girls' teams have lived up to expectations. The girls were 7-1-1 through Monday, highlighted by a 4-3 victory over defending Class 2A champion Hill-Murray on Friday. Emily Oden scored her second goal of the game with 27 seconds left in the third period for the game-winner.

The two-time Class 2A champion Edina boys are 5-1-1 after a 5-1 victory over Rosemount on Saturday. The only setback came Thursday in a 3-1 loss against state tournament championship game opponent Lakeville North. The Hornets, who outshot the Panthers 29-21, don't play again until Dec. 18, when they host Grand Rapids in the first game of the Edina Invitational. The three-night, four-team round-robin affair also includes annual participants Elk River and Eden Prairie.

As good at the hockey teams have been, the boys' and girls' basketball teams have had even better starts. The boys' team was 4-0 going into Tuesday's night's game against Bloomington Kennedy, with four players averaging in double figures led by Walt McGrory's 14 points per game. The girls were 3-0 after winning the Stillwater Tournament; they defeated Hudson (Wis.) 52-38 on Friday and host Stillwater 50-35 on Saturday.

Even the newly formed wrestling team has chipped in to the school's winning ways. Edina, which dissolved a longtime cooperative agreement with Richfield after last year, won its first two matches of the season at a triangular meet at DeLaSalle on Thursday. The Hornets defeated St. Croix Lutheran 50-27 and beat host Minnehaha/DeLaSalle 48-30. The school is fielding an Edina-only wrestling team for the first time in more than 20 years.

Royals hope to rebound

How important is Amir Coffey to the Hopkins boys basketball team? The 6-foot-7 junior forward suffered a season-ending knee injury in the second half of the Royals' third game of the season, an 89-69 victory over Burnsville. They've since lost 67-57 to Shakopee and 81-66 to Iowa City West in Saturday's Breakdown Tip-Off Classic. Hopkins is 2-3, the latest the team has been sub-.500 in a season in more than a decade. The Royals played St. Francis on Monday

Worth noting

Minnehaha Academy boys' hockey forward Andre Larenzie scored four goals, including two short-handed goals in the third period, and added an assist as the Redhawks rallied from a 3-1 second-period deficit to defeat Park of Cottage Grove.
